Consultant Psychiatrist - Older Adults

Dr Pratheek Sharma is a Consultant Psychiatrist with a particular interest in the mental health and wellbeing of older adults, especially those aged 65 years and above.

Alongside his private practice, he works as a Consultant Psychiatrist within the Older Adults Mental Health Service at Western Health.

Dr Sharma takes a warm, holistic and evidence-based approach to mental health care. He believes that effective treatment begins with taking the time to understand each person – not only their symptoms, but also their life experiences and the psychological, social and medical factors that influence their wellbeing. He places strong emphasis on building therapeutic relationships based on trust, respect and genuine human connection.

He has a particular interest in the assessment and management of cognitive impairment and dementia, recognising the importance of timely and accurate assessment for patients and their families. His practice also encompasses complex and longstanding mental health presentations, with an emphasis on comprehensive assessment, clear diagnostic formulation and individualised management.

Dr Sharma began his career in Psychiatry at St John’s Medical College, Bangalore, India, and has over 10 years of experience in Psychiatry. Following his move to Melbourne, he undertook training in Old Age Psychiatry at Eastern Health and Western Health. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists. 

Outside of work, Dr Sharma enjoys a good latte, spending time with his young family, following the AFL, and playing cricket.
