Payment Options

Understanding your payment options

Accessing private mental health care may be more affordable than you think.

There are several ways to pay for inpatient treatment at Sunshine Clinic Private Hospital, and the right option will depend on your individual circumstances. Our admissions team will help you understand your different funding options, check your eligibility and explain any out-of-pocket costs before you’re admitted.

Private health insurance

For many patients, private health insurance is the most straightforward and most common way to access inpatient treatment.

If you hold hospital cover that includes psychiatric services, your health fund may cover most of your hospital admission. Depending on your policy, you may still be responsible for an excess, co-payment or any medical gap fees. Before admission, we’ll confirm your level of cover with your health fund and explain any costs that may apply.

If you’ve never used your private health insurance for mental health treatment before, don’t worry. Our admissions team can help you understand what’s included under your policy.

Mental health waiver

Many Australians don’t realise that private health insurers offer a once-in-a-lifetime Mental Health Waiver.

If you currently have basic hospital cover, or your policy doesn’t include psychiatric services, you may be able to upgrade your cover and access inpatient mental health treatment without serving the usual two-month waiting period.

Eligibility criteria apply, and our team can help you determine whether this option is available to you.

Accessing your superannuation

In some circumstances, patients may be eligible to access their superannuation early to help pay for medical treatment.

There are two ways to apply:

  • The team at Access my Super can guide you through the process (fees apply).
  • You can manage your own application directly with the Australian Taxation Office.

If you’re considering this option, our team can provide more information on both of these.

Self-funded admissions

Some patients choose to pay for their admission entirely out of pocket.

Self-funding provides immediate access to private inpatient care without relying on private health insurance. If this option is right for you, we’ll provide a personalised quote outlining the expected costs before your admission so you can make an informed decision.

Other funding options

We also accept patients whose treatment is funded through approved third-party arrangements, including:
  • WorkCover and workers compensation schemes
  • Transport Accident Commission (TAC)
  • Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA)
